Brown Academy Literacy Initiative

Thank you from Brown Academy!

We are so grateful for everyone who donated backpacks, school supplies, and Kleenex boxes for the Brown Academy. Stay tuned for more opportunities to help!
As part of FCUMC’s outreach programs and in accordance with our core values, we are re-establishing our relationship with Tommie Brown Academy this fall. The program will enable kindergarten and first-grade teachers at Brown to improve their students’ literacy levels prior to entering second grade. Reading is fundamental and this initiative can make a significant difference in the children’s future academic success. We need First-Centenary Volunteers as follows:
  • 2 volunteers for each of three kindergarten classes, one on MWF and one on T/Th @ 8:30-9:40 each day
  • 2 volunteers for each of four first-grade classes. Also, one on MWF and the other on T/Th @ 9:00-10:05 each day.
Literacy instruction requires slightly over a one-hour commitment on the designated days. This commitment will include the entire 2022-2023 school year beginning in mid-September. No prior training in literacy instruction will be necessary. We hope you will join us in this opportunity to serve some terrific kids and their teachers!
